Christmas
11/Jan 2009
Shortly after the Christmas party (are you sensing a theme here?), we headed to New York to celebrate Christmas with my family.
As a treat to ourselves, Jamie and I spent the first two nights in midtown Manhattan. What a blast! Jamie usually drags me into the city kicking and screaming (I’m not a big fan of commuting in, walking around all day, and commuting back). This was a very different experience since we had a lot more time to do stuff.
We stayed at the Wellington Hotel in midtown Manhattan. The location was perfect (it was also the cheapest place we found in midtown). It was only a 15 minute walk to the theater district (the farthest south we walked). There was also a subway station right next to the hotel entrance; we stuck to walking though.
The temperature was absolutely freezing! Wow… it was windy too. We were normally fine because we kept warm by walking. The day we went to Ellis island was a different story. I can’t remember ever being that cold! It was also super windy. I’d love to go back in the spring and/or fall. We also couldn’t get in to the Statue’s museum because you have make reservations. We just saw her from the ferry and moved on to Ellis Island.
After our two days in the city, my parents drove in and took us back to the island (thanks!). There, we continued our theme of eating too much and doing too little. I can’t really complain. It was great to see everyone and hang out.
Here’s a short list of the things we did:
- Spamalot - You just can’t beat seeing Monty Python on Broadway
- Milos Estiatorio Restaurant - Great seafood and wine selection
- The Nook Restaurant - I love this tiny place
- Fluffy’s Restaurant - Awesome little bakery in midtown
- International Center of Photography Museum
- Ellis Island - Great for history buffs; one of the cheapest things you can do in NYC
- The Christmas Tree - Always a crowd pleaser
- Ben’s Deli (Mineola) - Great Jewish deli on Long Island (chain)
- Setauket Pastaria - Nice Italian place
- Kotobuki - Great sushi in Babylon
- Robert Moses Beach - A must see, no matter the time of year
